In Italy, we began 2021 with a great responsibility on our shoulders: ensuring that our country could make a difference throughout the year’s major political and institutional events, including the G20, the Pre-Food Systems Summit, COP26, and Italy’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai.
It was a year in which even the financial world realised that planetary health must become an economic priority, and in which national and international politics openly acknowledged the need to start again from people, communities, inland areas, the role of mayors, and the individual local heroes who make up our society.
Three words accompanied us throughout 2021: recovery, resilience and, above all, regeneration.
Powerful words, yet so widely overused that they risk losing their meaning.
Words that have become inflated, just like the concept of “sustainability” itself: not difficult to understand, but complex to put into practice in a holistic and concrete way.
Recovery, Resilience and Regeneration have also been accompanied by the interesting phenomenon of the “Great Resignation”, which has something important to teach us.
